Surrogate-based design optimization of a centrifugal pump impeller

The input power to a centrifugal pump is optimized by changing the impeller blade exit angle. In optimization, angles of three meridional profile layers are selected as design variables, while shaft and head developed multi-objective optimization functions obtained through surrogate model. A genetic algorithm used find optimum point. Computational fluid dynamics simulations performed solve Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations using shear-stress transport turbulence model for closure term. Manipulation angle affects both efficiency without affecting at best point, corresponding mass flow rate 1.75 kg/s. point shows an enhancement (>10%) in efficiency. Improved separation near trailing edge uniform loading decreases required impeller.
